As it is very important that any person participating in a legal process fully understands what they are being asked, what they might be agreeing to, what they are signing and can clearly communicate back to others any questions or answers they may have, interpreters are regularly used in the Court process.
The Director of Public Prosecutions utilizes the following services to assist witnesses in Court matters:

These services are usually able to provide interpreters for regional and remote Courts, including Katherine, Tennant Creek, and remote communities where court is held.
So that a suitable interpreter can be identified in time for the Court matter, it is important for a witness to tell the Prosecutor or Witness Assistance Officer that they want them to book an interpreter and which language is required. This should be done when the person receives their summons to come to Court.
The witness does not have to pay for the interpreter or do the booking; this is organized through the Witness Assistance Service or the Prosecutor.
An interpreter can also be arranged for meetings with the Prosecutor prior to Court if required.
